As the years start to pile up behind you and the miles tick away,the simple act of just being on your board becomes what matters more than tricks and trends. It's the ride,it has always been about the ride. As Big Tim once told Noah and I, "I just want to catch the feeling under my feet." a lot of times I would rather go push around aimlessly,ollieing over trash than go to a blown out skatepark that feels more like a training facility than a place to get free and creative. You see a lot of regimentation in skateboarding these days. Go to the park at this time,pay your money,skate from this time to this time and practice your tricks on the perfect ramp so you can go ride the dew tour or whatever bullshit is out there. This sounds like it's turning into a old guy rant,"back in my day it was so much better blah blah blah" but that's not my intention. I am just saying skateboarding has no set time or place,it is supposed to be loose and spontaneous. It's dangerous and dirty and you are going to get hurt. What about going to skate the fucked up stuff? The ramp with the holes in it? The rough sandpaper banks? Some crazy concrete concoction in a dudes backyard. Bombing hills at 2a.m. Just because you got juiced with your friends after having some beers! That is the true spirit of skateboarding to me,riding when and where you want with your crew with no rules. Existing in the zone of the in-betweens. We can come into your pay to play world anytime that we want but you can't just walk into our scene and think you are gonna roll our spots. Skateboarding is everywhere now and for the most part it is accepted, but only if it's placed into a box and labeled, corralled behind a fence so it can have a watchful eye kept on it and have "extreme" products shoved down your throat. But just under the surface the underground will always exist. Just like rats and roaches you can't kill us or get rid of us and there are more of us than they can even imagine! The weirdos,geeks and creeps are who i want to roll with. Keep the fire lit and ride free...

went down to CT to help poprock finish up the shotcrete work on the wilimantic park. it was a epic 2 day adventure of work and fun. we tried to find the asteroid that passed between the earth and moon but no luck. jeff managed to find jupiter and its moons wich was sick! if you dont know by know poprock is responsible for building all of the sick shit to shred down in CT. look for a poprock post soon. thanks for having us down and Wilimantic is going to be the best one yet!!!

History lesson part1

HISTORY LESSON PART 1It's strange to think about now that it's all done and I have been struggling with it for over a year now. Breaking Ground started because it had to happen! There was a dire need for quality skateparks after the plague of precast scituate concrete shit bombs exploded all over newengland. I was already out in Oregon working with airspeed and I was planning on staying in the holy land of concrete skateparks but fate has a funny way of working. Airspeed built the Newburyport park and that's were we all cut our teeth on the crete and were introduced to park building and it's also were sloppy sam and I were reacquainted. He showed up randomly one day in the pouring rain when we were tying rebar in the big bowl and climbed down and started tying bar with us. Geth asked "whats up? Who are you?" Sam replied "i am Sam and i am gonna show up everyday until you hire me." Good on his word he showed up and worked for free everyday,They hired him a few weeks later. After Newburyport we built a park in Jackson Wyoming and had a killer time in the Teton mountains and survived 9/11. Wyoming was also were sam made the break from Geth and proclaimed he was going to start his own deal at some point. I went back east for the winter and tried to get on the rye park build but it was already maxed out. I waited out the winter saved a few bucks and headed west to build in Eugene Oregon. I had one of the best times ever living and working in Oregon and skating some of the best parks in the world. We finished up Eugene in early October just in time for the seasonal rains but we had a job in mexico on a surf resort! Work and chill in Mexico on the beach for the winter? FUCK YES!!! I had a few weeks to kill so I took the coastal route south camping along the way and enjoying life on the road. Stopping to see friends in San Francisco and Los Angeles along the way. I heard from Geth and he was in Mexico and told me to come on down, I was stoked! I decided to hangout a few more days in L.A. then head for the boarder. Two days later I said my goodbyes and made my way to the boarder. I stopped a few miles from the check point at a store to get some supplies and when I came back out to the truck I could hear my phone ringing, it was sloppy sam. Like I said earlier fate has a strange way of working and here it was calling long distance! Sam asked what was up and if I wanted to go back east to build a park with him and be a part of his new company?! So here I am basically looking at the border of Mexico with the chance to work on a warm beautiful beach all winter or head to the cold of the approaching newengland winter to build a park with sloppy sam. The choice was fucking obvious I had to do it I had to build parks in newengland! It was our time and our chance to leave our mark and to leave something of ourselves behind for the future generation of shredders. I hung up the phone with sam and immediately pointed my truck east, put on some Johnny Cash and made the drive in record time. I got back home and didn't even go see my family first I went straight to Jamestown rhodeisland and started working! It was the beginning of Breaking Ground and one of the best times of my life. I don't think I can put into words what the whole experience means to me, I don't want to it's to personal. I was part of the original crew and I worked on every park. I told sam at the beginning that i was in it for the long haul and was going to take the ride all the way. People came and went but for the most part we had a real tight crew and I consider those guys my brothers. Poprock,George Rocha,Lenny,ferg,herb,myself and sam were the original crew. Ferg and herb left after Jamestown and we got THE BOMBER! I could write a book about him alone. Other crew member past and present were Noah Powell,Gump,Jus Martel,Pete stroke,iggy talls,young will,Cave Dave,James Powers,Jason the Mexican,turner,Melissa,and a few others that I am sure I am forgetting(sorry). So what's the point of this long winded story? I am not sure? I think it's kind of a way for me to deal with how it all just kind of abruptly ended almost as fast as it had all started. The last "official" breaking ground park was Andover in august of 2010. The company was sold and we tried to go on under the new owners but it was a lost cause,they just wanted our resume and were not actually interested in building progressive quality skateparks. They were only interested in the bottom line $$$.All of those miles, all of the characters we met, all of the crazy times and places we went, ALL OF THAT CONCRETE!!! Sleeping in my truck,on the ground,in shitty hotels, I wouldn't trade any of it for all the money in the world. Why? Because I got to be a part of something so unique and special a once in a lifetime chance to express myself and leave a part of myself behind that will hopefully be around for years and years. I hope that after we are all dead and gone and all Is said and done 500 years from now some archeological dig uncovers one of our parks and they ask the question "what the fuck is this? And who the hell built it!?!?P.s. And don't think that just because BG isn't around that we aren't building stuff anymore! Poprock is killing it! And like sam recently said to me "they want to turn skateparks into soccer fields. The businessman wants to run the skatepark building Industry,Well he can have it. The bridges,backyards and no mans lands are ours!!!" build your own reality...

A creature surrounded in myth and legend,The mystic scraper is a descendent of the scrape ape but has evolved into it's own being. Rarely seen the mystic scraper seems to just appear out of the ramps woodwork and disappears just as mysteriously in a cloud of smoke. They tend to have a trick selection straight out of a comic book and gear that only makes sense on them. Two different shoes, fingerless gloves with gold bracelets?! Riding a board that looks like it was gnawed by a rat from the wood a old barn. Not much is known about these ancient creatures because no one has ever been able to observer them for longer than a skate session. If you do have the good fortune of encountering the mystic scraper share a smoke and a beer with him and enjoy the epic stoke of this rare breed of shredder...

Ever since I was a young boy the road has always called out to me. From Tom Sawyer and huck Finn to Jack kerouack and Neal Cassidy and all of those books about traveling and finding your own path in the world. Once I got hold of a skateboard around age 11 it was all over. We would be out the door at 8am and come home at 10pm with all the time in-between exploring our town and anywhere else our wheels would take us. Around 13 I read ON THE ROAD and it changed my life in the same way that skateboarding did and hearing and seeing the bad brains did. You could go anywhere and be anyone you wanted to and we did. We figured out how to hitch hike to other towns, we took the bus and figured out how to ride the train into the city. For young kids we certainly had some shit figured out. It is something that has stayed with me now 25 plus years later. I have been living the skate rat life for so long that it's hard to imagine what normal people are all about. Reality tv? Internet friendship? Working some drone job to buy more useless gadgets? That shit isn't reality or living it's fake sucker used car bullshit. You want to live a little? Get out there and experience real life, even if it's just checking out a new city or spot in some other town. There is a lot out there to experience and there are still people to conncet with in a real human way. As a wise man once said "underway is the only way." see you out there. Coach....

I guess in the grande scheme of things it doesn't really matter what you build, a bank, ledge, tranny or bowl. What matters is that you try! Remember Burnside started out as some bags poured against a slanted wall. As skaters it is our DUTY NOW FOR THE FUTURE to take control of our own reality. By that I mean be your own path and build for yourself. It is all too common in today's world for people to be armchair participants. Just buy the right look sit back and watch the action on t.v. While you enjoy those tasty energy drinks and get fat. FUCK THAT SHIT!
Skateboarding was never meant to be the cool thing, it was always meant for the weirdos and cast-offs that didn't want to follow the crowd. Nowadays pros are elevated to celebrity status with big money contracts as the holy Grail at least that is what big business would want you to think.,That it is all about $$$ and tv drama.
So what does this have to do with D.I.Y. building? Well it has everything to do with the true spirit of skateboarding. You go out and do it yourself for yourselves against all of that fake shit. There needs to be a balance to everything, a yin to every yang. We are the defenders of the faith and the gatekeepers of the flame to the underground. You can laugh at me if you want but I keep that spark close to my heart and I know many do as well.
There will plenty of people to mock you and say you are wasting your time but pay them no mind. What are they doing, playing video games and trolling the Internet?
Don't worry about fucking up your first pours, because it is inevitable that you will!
Fucking up is part of life, I am endlessly blowing it. That's what makes us human and that is how you learn. Embrace it, learn from it and try again. That is the key, KEEP TRYING! There is no shame in trying and failing, the shame is in doing nothing at all.
All you need is 3 or 4 dedicated friends some beer and herb a little
P.M.A. and shit will happen, trust me. It ain't rocket science there is
a lot of info out there at your disposal. Ask questions and don't be
afraid to get your hands dirty!
Just remember that all of that dirt you shoveled is gonna end up back
in the hole on top of you someday and you can rest easy knowing that
